Scheduling of Burst Mode 3
Introduction
Burst mode 3 (BM3) is used to retrieve data
from the internal memories of the Cluster
instruments and put them in the science
telemetry stream for downlink to the ESA ground
stations. These memories are used to capture
short periods of very high resolution data
according to some event recognition algorithm
within the internal software of the instruments.
Some instruments (e.g. FGM) can also use
internal memory to capture low resolution data
outside data acquisition periods. BM3 periods
typically have a duration of six minutes, which
is sufficient to empty the largest instrument
memories.
BM3 strategy
JSOC is responsible for scheduling periods of
BM3 at regular intervals to ensure that science
data from internal memories are brought down to
the ground. This page provides access to
descriptions of the strategies that JSOC has
used to perform that task following discussion
with the Science Operations Working Group.
